Benazir Bhutto killed in suicide attack; supporters in uproar across Pakistan
RAWALPINDI, Pakistan - Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was killed Thursday in a suicide attack as she drove away from a campaign rally just minutes after addressing thousands of supporters, aides said.
The attacker shortly after Bhutto addressed the rally in the garrison city of Rawalpindi. There were conflicting accounts over the sequence of events.
Rehman Malik, Bhutto's security adviser, said Bhutto was shot in the neck and chest by the attacker, who then blew himself up.
Party supporter Chaudry Mohammed Nazir said that two gunshots rang out when Bhutto's vehicle pulled into the main street and then there was a big blast next to her car.
But Javed Iqbal Cheema, spokesman for the Interior Ministry, told state-run Pakistan Television that Bhutto died when a suicide bomber struck her vehicle.
At least 20 others were killed in the blast, according to an Associated Press reporter at the scene.
Bhutto was rushed to the hospital and taken into emergency surgery.
"At 6:16 p.m. she expired," said Wasif Ali Khan, a member of Bhutto's party who was at Rawalpindi General Hospital.
The death of the charismatic former prime minister threw the campaign for the Jan. 8 election into chaos and created fears of mass protests and an eruption of violence across the volatile South Asian nation.
Next to President Pervez Musharraf, Bhutto, 54, was the best known political figure in the country. She had served two terms as prime minister between 1988 and 1996. She was respected in the West for her liberal outlook and determination to combat the spread of Islamic extremism, a theme she returned to often in her campaign speeches.
Her death will leave a void at the top of her Pakistan People's party, the largest political group in the country.
As news of her death spread, supporters at the hospital in Rawalpindi smashed glass doors and stoned cars. Many chanted slogans against Musharraf, accusing the president of complicity in her killing.
Angry supporters took to the streets in the northwestern city of Peshawar as well other areas, chanting slogans against Musharraf. In Rawalpindi, the site of the attack, Bhutto's supporters burned election posters from the ruling party and attacked police, who fled from the scene.
In Karachi, shop owners quickly closed their businesses as supporters from Bhutto's party burned tires on the roads.
Nawaz Sharif, another former prime minister and leader of a rival opposition party, rushed to the hospital and addressed the crowd.
"Benazir Bhutto was also my sister, and I will be with you to take the revenge for her death," Sharif said. "Don't feel alone. I am with you. We will take the revenge on the rulers."
Senator Babar Awan, Bhutto's lawyer, said, "The surgeons confirmed that she has been martyred."
Bhutto's supporters at the hospital exploded in anger, smashing the glass door at the main entrance of the emergency unit. Others burst into tears. One man with a flag of Pakistan People's party tied around his head was beating his chest.
"I saw her with my own eyes sitting in a vehicle after addressing the rally. Then, I heard an explosion," said Tahir Mahmood, 55, as she sobbed. "I am in shock. I cannot believe that she is dead," he said.
Some at the hospital began chanting, "Killer, Killer, Musharraf," referring to Musharraf, Bhutto's main political opponent.
"We repeatedly informed the government to provide her proper security and appropriate equipment including jammers, but they paid no heed to our requests," Malik said.
In Washington, deputy State Department spokesman Tom Casey said: "Certainly, we condemn the attack on this rally. It demonstrates that there are still those in Pakistan who want to subvert reconciliation and efforts to advance democracy."
The United States has for months been encouraging Musharraf to reach some kind of political accommodation with the opposition, particular Bhutto, who is seen as having a wide base of support.
Bhutto had returned to Pakistan from an eight-year exile on Oct. 18. Her homecoming parade in Karachi was also targeted by a suicide attacker, killing more than 140 people. On that occasion she narrowly escaped injury.
Bhutto was killed just a few kilometres from the scene of her father's violent death 28 years earlier.
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, a former prime minister and the founder of the party that his daughter would later lead, was executed by hanging in 1979 in Rawalpindi on charges of conspiracy to murder that supporters said was politically motivated by the then-military regime. His killing led to violent protests across the country.
As Bhutto addressed the rally Thursday, she was flanked by a massive picture of her father.
Minutes later, the area was awash in blood.
An Associated Press reporter at the scene could see body parts and flesh scattered at the back gate of the Liaqat Bagh park where Bhutto had spoken. He counted about 20 bodies, including police, and could see many other wounded people.
Police cordoned off the street with white and red tape, and rescue workers rushed to put victims in ambulances as people wailed nearby.
The clothing of some of the victims was shredded and people put party flags over their bodies. Police caps and shoes littered the asphalt.
On Thursday, hundreds of riot police had manned security checkpoints to guard the venue. It was Bhutto's first public meeting in Rawalpindi since she came back to the country.
In November, Bhutto had also planned a rally in the city, but Musharraf forced her to cancel it, citing security fears.
In recent weeks, suicide bombers have repeatedly targeted security forces in Rawalpindi, a city near the capital where Musharraf stays and the Pakistan army has its headquarters.
Quotations from Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, assassinated Thursday in Rawalpindi:
"We have to modify our campaign to some extent because of the suicide bombings. We will continue to meet the public. We will not be deterred." - Shortly after narrowly escaping a suicide bombing in October on her return to Pakistan from an eight-year exile.
"I told him on my oath in his death cell, I would carry on his work." - Recalling a visit to her father, former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, before his execution in 1979.
"The primary message of the visit and the talks will be that freedom has returned to Pakistan. It is not only a success for the people of Pakistan but for all those who believe in freedom." - Preparing for a visit to the United States in 1989, a few months after she first took office as prime minister.
"The voter has gotten more demanding. In 1988, the voters just wanted democracy. Our campaign was much more general then. Now we are more specific." - 1993 Associated Press interview on her ultimately successful bid for re-election. She had been ousted in 1990.
"I always said that I was innocent and a victim of a politically motivated trial." - Commenting in 2001 when her 1999 conviction on corruption charges was suspended and a new trial ordered.
"I haven't given myself away. I belong to myself and I always shall." - Vowing in 1987 that her arranged Islamic marriage to Karachi businessman Asif Ali Zardari would not upstage her political career.
"Democracy needs support and the best support for democracy comes from other democracies. Democratic nations should ... come together in an association designed to help each other and promote what is a universal value - democracy." - 1989 speech at Harvard University.

In the past insurance agents acting as underwriters particularly in the life and health fields could accept or reject applications.
Technology plays an important role in an underwriter’s job. With these systems underwriters are better equipped to make sound decisions and avoid excessive losses. Underwriters use computer applications called “smart systems” to manage risks more efficiently and accurately.
With the aid of computers underwriters analyze information in insurance applications to determine if a risk is acceptable and will not result in a loss. In cases where casualty companies provide insurance through a single “package’’ policy covering various types of risks the underwriter must be familiar with different lines of insurance.
. Life and health insurance underwriters may further specialize in group or individual policies. Another type of group policy provides members of a group—a labor union for example—with individual policies reflecting their needs.
An increasing proportion of insurance sales particularly in life and health insurance is being made through group contracts. With these systems underwriters are better equipped to make sound decisions and avoid excessive losses. A standard group policy insures everyone in a specified group through a single contract at a standard premium rate.
The group underwriter analyzes the overall composition of the group to assure that the total risk is not excessive. Some group underwriters meet with union or employer representatives to discuss the types of policies available to their group. An insurance company may lose business to competitors if the underwriter appraises risks too conservatively or it may have to pay more claims if the underwriting actions are too liberal. In cases where casualty companies provide insurance through a single “package’’ policy covering various types of risks the underwriter must be familiar with different lines of insurance. In making this determination underwriters serve as the main link between the insurance carrier and the insurance agent. The casualty underwriter analyzes the application of each group member and makes individual appraisals.
Insurance companies protect individuals and organizations from financial loss by assuming billions of dollars in risks each year.
Most underwriters specialize in one of three major categories of insurance—life health or property and casualty. In cases where casualty companies provide insurance through a single “package’’ policy covering various types of risks the underwriter must be familiar with different lines of insurance. Edwin Valero hits so hard, he makes middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik look dainty. He's so aggressive, he makes super featherweight star Manny Pacquiao seem passive.
Power and aggression are the recipe for boxing stardom in the U.S., but Valero is virtually anonymous on the world stage. Sadly, he may be forever.
But the hardcore fans who have followed his progress on YouTube will get an opportunity to see him live on pay-per-view on Saturday when he takes on Zaid Zavaleta in Cancun, Mexico.
If you haven't seen Valero, think of a young Mike Tyson and you'll get an idea of what you're about to see.The Venezuelan fights with a fury. Remember Tyson's famous quote about wanting to drive his opponent's nose into his brain? That's the kind of fighter Valero is.
"I just give the people what they want to see," Valero said. "They want to see guys get in there and fight like men."
Most men, though, don't fight like Valero, whose record is astonishing. He is 22-0 with 22 knockouts, including 19 in the first round.
But Valero hasn't fought in the U.S. since 2003 and may never do so again because he's under medical suspension in New York. By federal law, whenever a fighter is under suspension in one state, other states must honor it.
Valero's suspension stems from injuries suffered in a Feb. 5, 2001, motorcycle accident in which he wasn't wearing a helmet and suffered a fractured skull.
About a year later, he was cleared by doctors in Venezuela to fight and turned pro on July 9, 2002. He defeated Eduardo Hernandez by first-round knockout – the first of 18 in a row to start his career.
"I don't even like to talk about it because it doesn't matter," Valero said. "I'm healthy. I can fight. So that doesn't make any sense to talk about that."
Golden Boy Promotions signed him after his third and final fight in the U.S., when he stopped Tomas Zambrano in the first round in Irvine, Calif., on Dec. 18, 2003.
But when Golden Boy tried to put him on a card in New York in 2004, he was declined because of a failed MRI and placed on medical suspension.
That decision forced Valero into something of a boxing exile. He's traveled the world since, fighting in Japan, France, Panama, Venezuela and Argentina, taking on second-tier opposition and lesser names.
Were he able to fight in the U.S., he'd be in the mix for big-money bouts against the likes of Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, both of whom rate in the top five of the Yahoo! Sports boxing rankings. With his power and relentless style, he'd probably be one of the biggest names in the game
There's a tendency in boxing to mythologize punchers; rarely are they as good as their reputations. Valero, though, is different, insists Golden Boy president Oscar De La Hoya.
"He doesn't need five or six shots to take you out," De La Hoya said. "All he needs is one. He's got scary kind of power."
He'll use it on Saturday to take out Zavaleta, who is little more than a sacrificial lamb. But there are no big fights for Valero to look forward to because most of the big names at super featherweight are fighting in the U.S.
Top Rank had briefly talked of matching Pacquiao with Valero in Macau, but it's unlikely given Pacquiao's ability to generate money and Valero's lack of a profile.
Valero, 26, insists he's not bothered by his status. He says he's simply happy to be fighting.
"Those guys are on their way out anyway," Valero said of Pacquiao and Marquez. "Of course I would want to fight them, but I can't. I feel confident one day I'll fight in the U.S. and then I'll get my chance. But if I don't, OK. I am a world champion and I'll just defend my title wherever I can."

A lawyer for Roger Clemens strongly denies the seven-time Cy Young Award winner used steroids to pump up his body and his pitching statistics.
Roger Clemens has won seven Cy Young Awards pitching for several teams, including the New York Yankees.
Clemens, considered a shoo-in for the Baseball Hall of Fame someday, was prominently featured in the report on performance-enhancing drugs that former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell released Thursday.
"Roger Clemens adamantly, vehemently, and whatever other adjectives can be used, denies that he has ever used steroids or ... improper substances," Clemens' attorney, Rusty Hardin, said Thursday.
"He is really, really concerned and upset that he has been named in this report. It's based on the allegations, apparently, of a trainer that he's had in the past. ... That's not a standard someone should be held out in public to have done something as serious as using steroids in baseball." Watch Hardin critique report »
The report says Brian McNamee, a former Toronto Blue Jays strength coach, testified that Clemens received injections of the steroid Winstrol in Clemens' Toronto, Ontario, apartment in 1998.
McNamee "injected Clemens approximately four times in the buttocks over a several-week period with needles that Clemens provided," the report said. It said Clemens' pitching improved during that time.
"During this period of improved performance, Clemens told McNamee that the steroids 'had a pretty good effect' on him," the report said.
The report said McNamee also injected Clemens with testosterone and human growth hormone after Clemens moved to the New York Yankees in 2000.
"Roger has been repeatedly tested for these substances and he has never tested positive," Hardin said in a statement. "There has never been one shred of tangible evidence that he ever used these substances and yet he is being slandered today."
Hardin told reporters that Clemens had not been given the opportunity to defend himself.
"It's not right to put somebody in a report with this kind of allegation and lack of proof, because there's nothing he can do to combat it," Hardin told reporters.
"He's not being charged with anything, he has just been smeared with something."
Hardin said his client was "outraged that his name is included in the report based on the uncorroborated allegations of a troubled man threatened with criminal prosecution."
"I did what I was asked to do as fairly and as thoroughly and as accurately as I could," Mitchell said Friday on CNN's "American Morning."
Mitchell said he had enough witness reports, checks and admissions to justify going public with players' names.
"I think it's quite wrong to say there's no concrete evidence," he told CNN. "There's several hundred pages of evidence."
Mitchell said he invited everyone named in the report to meet with him before the report was issued, but almost all declined.
Don Fehr, president of the Major League Baseball Players Association, said Thursday the union was not consulted. That "left us no choice but to represent our members in this inquiry," he said, as any union would protect its members in the face of possible sanctions.
He said the association did not tell players not to cooperate with the investigation, but advised them "on the legal lay of the land" and suggested they retain their own counsel.
"Many players are named. Their reputations have been adversely affected, probably forever, even if it turns out down the road that they should not have been," Fehr said.
After a Cabinet meeting on Friday, President Bush -- former owner of the Texas Rangers -- weighed in on the Mitchell report.
"Like many fans, I've been troubled by the steroid allegations. I think it's best that we not jump to any conclusions on individual players," he said in the White House Rose Garden.
"Steroids have sullied the game, and players and the owners must take the Mitchell report seriously; I'm confident they will," Bush said. "And my hope is that this report is a part of putting the 'steroid era' of baseball behind us."
He noted the influence that professional athletes have on young people.
"I urge those in the public spotlight, particularly athletes, to understand that when they violate their bodies they're sending a terrible signal to America's young."
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Astros owner Drayton McLane said he still plans to offer Roger Clemens a personal services contract when the pitcher retires, barring hard evidence that the Rocket took steroids.
Clemens was mentioned more than 80 times in the Mitchell Report, the result of an investigation into steroid use in baseball led by former Sen. George Mitchell. Through his attorney, Clemens vehemently denied the allegations against him, all based on testimony by former Yankees strength and conditioning coach Brian McNamee.
"This is only accusations that somebody made," McLane said Friday night. "That doesn't mean he's guilty. We're just going to work with Roger and his agents, Randy and Alan Hendricks, and see where that takes us."
The 45-year-old Clemens played for the Astros from 2004-06, along with Andy Pettitte, who also was named in the report. Clemens won the last of seven Cy Young awards in 2004, after going 18-4. He and Pettitte won 30 games together in 2005, helping the Astros reach the World Series for the first time.
Clemens still lives near Houston and last month, Randy Hendricks sent McLane an e-mail that said Clemens was ready to begin his personal services contract with the team

The script required a kissing scene. I nervously approached my leading lady nandana sen and spent some time convincing her. K. Hes very tough though with a very soft heart said the proud daughter. K.
I really dont know where that came from.
Esha gave her dad a suitcase of clothes on his nd birthday saturday. Nandana sen was perfect.
But not as much as my younger sister ahana. Mine is an original story the debutant director says. Yes the film does have strangers as its title and theres a train running through the plot.
Rai is quite bewildered by reports that strangers is based on alfred hitchcocks strangers on a train. And not as a touristy city. No one in our entire family resembles dad as much as ahana. I look for my dad in my male friends and find them quite inadequate. I like shopping only for my dad and my little niece she added. How was i to know the objection would come from the other party

NAIROBI (Reuters) - A new species of giant spitting cobra, measuring nearly nine feet and possessing enough venom to kill at least 15 people, has been discovered in Kenya, a conservation group said on Friday.
wildlifeDirect said the cobras were the world's largest and had been identified as unique. The species has been named Naja Ashei after James Ashe, who founded Bio-Ken snake farm on Kenya's tropical coast where the gigantic serpents are found.
"A new species of giant spitting cobra is exciting and reinforces the obvious -- that there have to be many other unreported species but hundreds are being lost as their habitats disappear under the continued mismanagement of our planet," said the group's chairman, Kenyan environmentalist Richard Leakey.
Ashe, now deceased, was the first to catch a larger-than-normal spitting cobra in the 1960s and suggest it belonged to a different species.
Bio-Ken director Royjan Taylor said the recognition of the new species was an opportunity to raise awareness about snake conservation as well as find remedies for the powerful bite.
"Naja Ashei is responsible for a very serious snake bite," he told Reuters by telephone from the farm. "People don't care about saving snakes. They talk of saving dolphins or cats, but never snakes!"
The conservationists' excitement has drawn scientific endorsement from a British-based biologist.
Research published by Wolfgang Wuster, of the University of Wales, said a field visit confirmed the Naja Ashei is a new species. "The new species is diagnosable from all other African spitting cobras by the possession of a unique DNA," he wrote in a review in July
The Golden Compass is the first book in a controversial but wildly popular British trilogy by Philip Pullman. And it's now a blockbuster holiday kids' movie. What parents don't know is that the books are about children on a quest to save the world from an oppressive and senile God named Yaweh (which is God's name in the Hebrew Bible), and from the deception and control of his religious leaders. They save the world, in part, by actually killing God.
Most American parents have been completely unaware of the series. When first released here in 2001, Joan Slattery of publisher Knopf Books for Young Readers, told the Washington Post that she was ''pleasantly surprised and relieved'' that there hadn't been any complaints.
Well, that's all changed. And parents must be warned that this special-effects-laden, exciting movie is based on books that, hopefully, they would never want their kids to read.
The movie promotion, of course, never mentions these concerns, and the author has been indignant about claims that he has a subversive agenda. This is funny, since he proudly told the Washington Post in 2001 that in the trilogy, ''I'm trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief.''
Now, I applaud the studio for watering down the most overtly anti-religious material from the first book for the movie. At least they made it more family friendly. As Kiera McCaffrey of the Catholic League explained in an interview, ''Making family friendly movies is laudable, and we are not so concerned with the film, per se, but it poses a bigger problem. Because parents and kids will see this movie and then want the books . . . and the books aren't watered down.''
Parents need to know that this first step will lead to another. And the next books are disturbing. We saw this trend with Harry Potter -- as each book and movie got darker and darker, to the point that many parents would never have let their kids read the last book, had it come out first.
I'm sad that parents even have to worry about this, especially at this time of year, when, as many families celebrate the birth of Christ, a foothold is given to books that want to do anything but.

10. Paris Hilton Back in June, following an appearance at the MTV Movie Awards, Hilton willingly turned herself in to police to begin serving a 23-day jail sentence, related to her arrest for violating the terms of her alcohol-related probation. She ended up serving 23 days and was released.
9. Game Compton-bred rapper the Game was collared in mid-May in Los Angeles and booked on suspicion of making criminal threats. The arrest, according to police, was connected to an incident that went down three months prior, amid a pickup basketball game. The rapper was accused of brandishing a weapon during the game, which he used to threaten one of the other players. He was later released on $50,000 bail.
8. Nick Bollea Last month, the 17-year-old son of wrestler Hulk Hogan turned himself in to police and was arrested on charges of reckless driving for his role in an August crash in Florida that left his passenger, 22-year-old John Graziano, in critical condition. Graziano sustained a broken skull and has been in a coma ever since the accident. Bollea is currently awaiting trial and denies any wrongdoing.
7. Tony Yayo Back in March, Yayo was arrested on charges of harassment and endangering the welfare of a child in New York, for allegedly slapping the 14-year-old son of the Game's manager, Jimmy Rosemond. He's currently awaiting trial.
6. Lindsay Lohan Following a stint in rehab, Lohan was arrested in late May for driving under the influence of alcohol after losing control of her Mercedes-Benz convertible and ramming a curb. Police found a small amount of cocaine inside the mangled sports car, and she was right back in rehab. Then, in late July, Lohan was arrested again after being in a bizarre car chase. Lohan refused to take a breathalyzer test, but failed several other field-sobriety tests, and police also found a small amount of cocaine on her. She faced a handful of charges but wound up serving only 84 minutes in jail for her offenses.
5. Lil Wayne In July, the rapper's first major gig in New York was followed with a trip to the clink, following Wayne's arrest on gun-possession charges. His tour bus was pulled over, and cops searched it, finding a .40 caliber pistol and some marijuana. And then, in October, Wayne was pinched in Boise, Idaho, on a felony fugitive charge issued in Georgia for allegedly possessing a controlled substance.
4. Remy Ma The female rapper was charged this summer with attempted murder charge following a shooting outside a New York nightclub. She pleaded not guilty to the charge and was released on $250,000 bond but was ordered earlier this week to stand trial on charges of gang assault and witness tampering. Prosecutors argue Remy Ma ordered a group of men to attack the boyfriend of her friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph, who she is accused of shooting in July after a dispute that took place on a New York street.
3. OiNK founder Alan Ellis The 24-year-old Ellis was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and copyright infringement in October as part of an Interpol-led investigation into OiNK, the invite-only file-sharing site he launched three years ago. The site provided illegal downloads of pre-release music and media to its more than 180,000 members before authorities shut it down. Ellis, an IT consultant, operated the site from his apartment in Middlesbrough in the north of England. He dismissed the charges, claiming his site was no different than Google.
2. Kid Rock Before he was arrested in late October on charges of misdemeanor battery in Georgia for allegedly beating up a man at a Waffle House with his entourage, Rock was arrested for clocking ex-wife Pamela Anderson's first husband, Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee, during the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas. Rock said a lingering "level of disrespect" between the two provoked the fisticuffs. He was charged by Las Vegas police with misdemeanor battery, but Lee later requested Rock not be charged over the incident.
1. T.I. In mid-October, the rapper was arrested in Atlanta on charges of buying illegal machine guns, possession of three unregistered machine guns and two silencers, and possession of firearms by a convicted felon. Agents booked T.I. as he allegedly accepted a delivery of three machine guns and two silencers from one of his bodyguards. After posting bail, T.I. was remanded to house arrest, and is not allowed to step out his front door unless he has a medical appointment or court appearance. He is awaiting trial on the gun charges.
Here is a magical-mystery movie with everything money can eagerly buy: big-name stars, boffo effects, a story pre-sold in a mass-cult fantasy novel. The only thing "The Golden Compass" lacks, alas, is magic. And its mystery is a little too mysterious.
The picture looks great — director Chris Weitz and his town-size team of digital technicians have created a fantasy world of misty cities, gleaming dirigibles and intricate steampunk gadgetry that really pops. But in attempting to cram as much as possible of Philip Pullman's 400-page novel into a two-hour movie, Weitz — who wrote the script after nixing Tom Stoppard's pass at one — gives us both way too much and much too little. We're so pounded down by all the exposition in the beginning, and then by the stampede of daemons and bears and mechanical insects arriving in its wake, that fans of the book may slump in despair, and non-fans in simple indifference.
The story is set in a parallel world that resembles Victorian England. There's even a parallel Oxford University, where spunky little Lyra Belacqua (Dakota Blue Richards) is happily ensconced as the ward of the scientist-explorer Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig, who's in the movie for about as long as it might take you or me to hail a cab). The free-thinking Asriel is a heretical figure to the sinister Magisterium (think the Catholic Church — Pullman did, although New Line Cinema really hopes you won't). Both Asriel and the Magisterium are obsessed with something called Dust, a shimmery substance that no one entirely understands, least of all us. About the time Asriel decides to take off for northern polar regions in search of the source of this stuff, the glamorous Mrs. Coulter (blazingly blonde Nicole Kidman) arrives on the scene, making a runway entrance into a vast university dining hall that's so blatantly Hogwartsian, you half-expect to see Albus Dumbledore go gliding by, possibly in drag.
By this point, you'll have noticed that all the characters in the movie are walking around with little animals perched on their shoulders or yipping around their feet. These are the above-noted daemons — advisors, protectors, stand-ins for the soul, you might say. Little kids have cute daemons: birds, butterflies, fuzzy quadrupeds of various endearing sorts. The evil operatives of the Magisterium lean more toward serpents. Mrs. Coulter's daemon is a monkey, which I found to be a stumper.
Anyway, Mrs. Coulter offers to take Lyra to "the North," as it's called (think Norway), unaware that Lyra has been hoping to follow in Asriel's footsteps and maybe get to the bottom of this Dust thing. By now we've also learned that a group called the Gobblers — nefarious minions of the Magisterium — have been kidnapping children, and before long we're further informed that they've been spiriting the kids off to a snowbound laboratory to perform alarming experiments on them. Lyra is enraged, but Mrs. Coulter takes a suspiciously sympathetic view of Magisterial undertakings: "They keep things working by telling people what to do."
I haven't mentioned the alethiometer — the titular Golden Compass. This is a nifty device that can tell all truths and reveal all that others wish to hide (if I may slip into the fancy-speak of the story for a moment). Nor have I touched upon the armored Ice Bears — and there's a whole kingdom full of them. Lyra recruits one of these enormous creatures, named Iorek, to accompany her on her polar quest. She also gets backup from another outfit called the Gyptians, who sail about in a pirate-y schooner. Then there's a drawling, Stetson-topped cowboy "aeronaut" named Scoresby (Sam Elliott — even his rabbit demon has a cracker accent), and a sky full of fierce witches armed with bows and arrows. I'm leaving stuff out, believe me.
Admirers of Pullman's book, who've invariably followed this tale through to its third-volume conclusion, marvel at the story's scope and depth of purpose. The movie strives mightily to stuff in hints of those things, but the result is mostly clutter and confusion. (In this regard, lopping off the book's ending, which had actually been shot, is something of a puzzlement.)
I'm guessing part of the fault for the picture's shortcomings probably lies in New Line micromanagement. Having grossed billions with its "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, the company has surely latched on to the similarly tripartite "His Dark Materials" with visions of another corporate cash-wallow. But this one ain't that one. The first "Rings" movie set up the story with ravishing clarity: good Hobbits, bad wizards, evil ring. "The Golden Compass" (which reportedly cost $200 million to make, approximately two thirds of the budget for the entire "Rings" trilogy) buries us in so much desperate explication that the shape of the story never really emerges. The picture ends with the promise — or the threat — of a sequel. Given the numbers, and this movie's probable reception, I'm betting it never gets made.
LOS ANGELES - Attorneys for "Desperate Housewives" star Teri Hatcher say there's no way to gloss over it — the allegations that she promoted a rival lip plumping product are false.
Hatcher and her production company, ISBE Productions, entered into an agreement in 2005 with the skin products company Hydroderm for the actress to exclusively promote its products.
The company filed suit Tuesday, alleging Hatcher violated the agreement by promoting City Lips, which competes with Hydroderm's lip plumping product.
In his motion, Hydroderm attorney Robert Heller wrote that Hatcher's name or image has been used to promote 22 other cosmetic products.
In his response, filed Thursday, Hatcher's attorney, Joseph Taylor, wrote that the actress did not make deals with other cosmetic companies, did "absolutely nothing wrong and has been ready, willing, able and eager" to work for Hydroderm, having participated in an all-day photo shoot and having made herself available for TV appearances.
Taylor blamed management upheaval at Hydroderm for causing "corporate paralysis" and called the lawsuit and a related press release a "destructive publicity scheme" designed to prevent Hatcher from claiming the full value of the agreement.
Hydroderm wants to recover the $2.4 million in payments to Hatcher since November 2005, plus about $400,000 in expenses.
Taylor said the agreement contains a binding arbitration clause and the matter should not have ended up in court.
Hydroderm is "trying to hound" Hatcher into taking less than the company agreed to, her lawyer said.
In a related action Thursday, Superior Court Judge Helen I. Bendix denied a request to speed up the discovery process in the case.
For many people, Christmas means a severe case of holiday dread, directly tied to a sense of obligation to spend money in order to have a meaningful celebration.
We all know the pain of those credit card bills in January and February. If we've been particularly festive, that pain might even stretch into the spring or summer, or -- yikes -- the next holiday season.
This year the average U.S. consumer plans to spend $817 on holiday-related shopping, plus an additional $107 on "non-gift" purchases of promoted or discounted items, according to the National Retail Federation -- up 3.7 percent from 2006.
At the same time, however, 70 percent of Americans say they would welcome less emphasis on gift giving and spending during the holiday season, according to the Center for a New American Dream.
If you're among those who feel holiday spending is out of control, remember: It doesn't have to be that way. You can start new family traditions or return to some abandoned long ago.
How to go about it?
First of all, discuss the matter or simply warn your family in advance so that you avoid any awkwardness when it comes time to open gifts. At the same time, show respect for those who may not want to go along with your pared-down spending plans. If they enjoy it and can afford it, don't try to ruin their fun.
Once that's settled, come up with a plan. Here are some popular ideas you can adopt or tweak to your own situation.
De-commercialize Christmas:
Yankee Swap A fun-filled gift exchange that involves everyone.
Secret Santa Also called a Polyanna, this is tried and true.
Un-Secret Santa A key person matches up givers and receivers.

HOLLYWOOD - Actresses Rosario Dawson and Anne Hathaway have pledged their support to Jennifer Love Hewitt after she hit out at the media for criticizing bikini photographs showing her in an unflattering light.
Love Hewitt was snapped in her black two-piece swimsuit last month as she enjoyed a dip in the sea--but the Ghost Whisperer star's voluptuous bottom soon became the subject of ridicule on many celebrity blogs.
The 28-year-old then posted a message on her own Web site saying she is content with her figure, but is unhappy that comments on her weight will put young girls under more pressure to diet.
And Sin City star Dawson couldn't agree more, telling People.com, "They'll make a whole story about it if someone gains five pounds.
"I think there is a huge obsession with size-zero jeans, and it's just really scary. It makes me really nervous, because I don't know how in the world we're supposed to be that thin unless we're totally starving and drugging up."
Hathaway adds, "I don't think women should only be defined by their bodies and their weight. It's a cycle we've been in for some time, and I don't really like it."

New Delhi, It seems newly wed Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is enjoying herself completely, as the Bollywood actor strongly recommends the institution of marriage to everyone.
"I am a happy girl, can't you make out?" beamed Aishwarya.
"Marriage is a beautiful chapter in life. It is so blissful and wonderful...in fact difficult to articulate. I strongly recommend it to everyone. Each one of us must experience it," she told IANS Wednesday.
"Everybody was teasing me when I came here to celebrate 'karva chauth' (a Hindu ritual). But I said I have to experience it," she added.
The actress, who won the Miss World pageant in 1994 and started her stint in the Hindi film industry with "Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya," was in the capital to unveil the bridal collection of watch brand Longines.
She got married to Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan on Feb 20, 2007.
Commenting on the response of people after her marriage she said: "Wherever we have travelled, people have showered us with their blessing. I am bowled over by their response and very strongly feel that we are a part of an extended family."
However, Aishwarya said she hasn't spent much time with her family.
"Our honeymoon was our first holiday and after that we were straight back to work. I wish I could have taken more time off. I would love to spend every minute of the day with Abhishek."
Being a workingwoman the actress agrees that marriage brings a lot of responsibilities and one has to juggle up too many things.
"I am enjoying every aspect of being married. But frankly telling being a workingwoman it is more hectic now. There is a constant race against time. I could never imagine that my hours and days would be so full."
"Although I have found the key to it - time management. It is imperative for every working individual to discover the ability of time management. You have to take time out for your maternal family, in-laws and for your own (husband-wife) relationship at the same time."
After her lead roles in hits like "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam," "Devdas," "Dhoom 2" and "Guru", she is now all set to woo audiences in "Sarkar Raj," "Pink Panther 2" and "Jodhaa Akbar".
Mumbai, Irrfan Khan has done the seemingly unthinkable in Mira Nair's AIDS-related film "Migration". He plays an unhappily married man in a secret anguished affair with another.
The film was screened at the 38th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) and also on TV for World AIDS Day.
Earlier, Sanjay Suri was the first mainstream hero to go happily gay in "My Brother Nikhil" and he has now decided to play another gay character in a forthcoming play.
So, have Bollywood actors decided to get over their inhibitions about tackling homosexuality?
Ranbir Kapoor: Play gay? Why not? I'd love to play any character that takes me into unexplored parts of my psyche. But first let me serenade all these lovely ladies in our movies.
Akshaye Khanna: It would depend entirely on the script.
Manoj Bajpai: I'd love to play a gay character if it's written well and it's part of a very good script.
Vinay Pathak: The excitement of portraying any character lies in the strength of the character's graph and progression vis-a-vis the plot and its conflicts. How a character helps a narrative grow is what interests me the most. The cast's sexual orientation and other factors are all secondary.
Rohit Roy: Playing gay? I don't mind at all. But it depends on the film and its director's intentions and most importantly how his sexual preference affects the film and his character. If homosexuality is intrinsic to the narrative and the director possesses the sensibilities of Mira Nair or Aparna Sen, I'd surely play gay. But I'd never play gay to titillate senseless mirth or to ridicule the gay community. My character's sexuality would have to drive the choices he makes in life, which in turn takes the picture forward.
Tusshar Kapoor: I'd play gay only if the director has the class and sensitivity to handle such a portrayal without making it a caricature or offensive.
Arshad Warsi: I'd willingly play a gay character. It will be a new challenge to me as an actor.
Anupam Kher: Playing gay is nothing new to me. I did it years ago in Rahul Rawail's "Mast Kalandar" and David Dhawan's "Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge".
Ravi Kishan: It's a big challenge for a straight guy to play gay. I'd love to play a gay character. I used to play Sita in the stage shows of Ramleela back home in Jaunpur.
Sammir Dattani: I must admit playing one makes me slightly uncomfortable at this stage of my career when I'm still finding my bearings. For my new film "Dhoom Dhadaka" I had to get into drag and I was very uneasy. It took Tom Hanks and Irrfan years before they came to "Philadelphia" and "Migration". I need to be experienced as an actor before I attempt a character so distanced from me.
TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - A former Florida teacher who admitted having sex with a 14-year-old boy was arrested on Tuesday on charges of violating probation by having unsupervised contact with a teenage female co-worker.
Debra Lafave pleased guilty to the sex charge in 2005 in a deal with prosecutors. She was sentenced to three years of house arrest followed by seven years of probation.
One of the terms of her sentence was that she not have unsupervised conduct with anyone under the age of 18.
According to a report from her probation officer, Lafave talked to a 17-year-old girl about sexual issues, boyfriends and family problems when they were working together at a restaurant in a retirement community near Tampa.
Lafave, 27, was released without bail Tuesday afternoon shortly after her arrest.
She now works at a hair salon.
"I would characterize this simply as 'girl talk,'" said her attorney, John Fitzgibbons.
When Lafave, a former model and middle school teacher, was in court two years ago, Fitzgibbons said she was too pretty to go to jail because her good looks would make her a target of other inmates. She pleaded guilty to two counts of committing lewd and lascivious acts with a boy who attended the school where she taught.

President Bush said Tuesday that the international community should continue to pressure Iran on its nuclear programs, saying a new intelligence report finding that Tehran halted its development of a nuclear bomb provides an opportunity.
"I view this report as a warning signal that they had the program, they halted the program," Bush said. "The reason why it's a warning signal is they could restart it."
Bush spoke one day after a new national intelligence estimate found that Iran halted its nuclear weapons program in the fall of 2003, largely because of international scrutiny and pressure. That finding is in stark contrast to the comparable intelligence estimate of just two years ago, when U.S. intelligence agencies believed Tehran was determined to develop a nuclear weapons capability and was continuing its weapons development program.
It is also stood in marked contrast to Bush's rhetoric on Iran. At his last news conference on Oct. 17, for instance, he said that people "interested in avoiding World War III" should be working to prevent Iran from having the knowledge needed to make a nuclear weapon.
Bush said Tuesday that he only learned of the new intelligence assessment last week. But he portrayed it as valuable ammunition against Tehran, not as a reason to lessen diplomatic pressure.
"To me, the NIE (National Intelligence Estimate) provides an opportunity for us to rally the international community to continue to rally the community to pressure the Iranian regime to suspend its program," the president said. "What's to say they couldn't start another covert nuclear weapons program."
He also asserted that the report means "nothing's changed."
"I still feel strongly that Iran is a danger," he said. "I think the NIE makes it clear that Iran needs to be taken seriously as a threat to peace. My opinion hasn't changed."
Bush called the news conference, his first in nearly seven weeks, to intensify pressure on lawmakers amid disputes over spending and the Iraq war. Taking advantage of his veto power and the largest bully pulpit in town, Bush regularly scolds Congress as a way to stay relevant and frame the debate as his presidency winds down.
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Christian Bale is in negotiations to star in "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins," the fourth installment of the hit science fiction series.
McG ("Charlie's Angels," "We Are Marshall") is directing the movie, which will be distributed by Warner Bros.
The series, which originated with filmmaker James Cameron and made Arnold Schwarzenegger a star, centered on a robot from the future, when machines wage war against humanity, whose goal was to kill Sarah Connor, the mother of the future leader of the human resistance. As the movies progressed, the son, played by Edward Furlong in "T2" and Nick Stahl in "T3," took a more prominent role.
"T4's" story, by David Campbell Wilson, John Brancato and Michael Ferris, focuses on John Connor, now in his 30s, as he leads what is left of the human race against the machines.
Bale, who appeared this year in "3:10 to Yuma," "Rescue Dawn" and "I'm Not There," is currently filming Warner's "Batman Begins" sequel, "The Dark Knight."

This spicy traditional German cookie takes a few days to ripen into its full flavor. This makes a large batch, but they last for weeks in a sealed container.
Gamers started playing Agent 47 back in 2000, but today it’s Tim Olyphant who gets to bring to life the trained assassin from the popular Hitman video game franchise.
Born and raised to kill, 47 works as a hired gun for "The Agency," but when a job turns bad he soon sees his life turn upside down. Despite his lethal grace, unwavering precision, and resolute pride in his work, he begins to develop feelings for a mysterious Russian woman and the stirrings of a conscience.
Hollywood.com caught up with Olyphant to talk about his killer new role.
On developing his character: "I think the angle I take is you trust that sort of takes care of itself; you kill a bunch of guys in an elevator and you walk out the only guy without a scratch on you that defines who you are. And so you trust that, and you can leave that alone. You can say, ‘I don’t really need to try to convince everyone I’m a badass, cause I just walked into that situation and I’m the one who comes out without a scratch.’ And so you kind of put that aside, and what else you try and do is say, ‘What else is there?’ How many other angles can you look at this and where is the humanity in it all. You start with a guy who goes from job to job to job, and it sounds sort of a cliché, it’s sort of a lonely existence--a traveling salesman ... What happens when that guy’s world just turns completely upside down?"

On skipping the video game and going straight to the internet: "I did read about [the video game]--the lovely thing about the internet ... [is]there’s a wealth of information there - however, factual I’m not sure, but there is a wealth of information. And it felt like we did a--based on what I read and what I understand--a good job of honoring and paying tribute to the game, but at the same time we weren’t really slaves to it. It was a nice place to work from. Xavier [Gens] was a big fan of the game--the director--a big gamer, in general. He got really involved and was really adamant about certain things that were reflected in the game. I also just thought that other than the imagery I saw, there were things like--there were a lot of things that once we got our hands on the script that Xavier and I both saw eye to eye on. It’s hard to tell what came first--whether we read about something in the game that inspired choices that were made or whether they were choices we wanted to do that were also reflected in the game. We were conscious to it the whole time."
On shaving his head: "It’s a little chilly, it’s a little chilly, yeah. But, you know, it came with the part."
On rumors that the original cut was too violent: "There were never any conversations with any of the executives here or the producers in France or with Xavier that was about fear of being too violent. The only conversations we’ve had have been creative conversations that have been about the kind of violence and where it hurts or helps the story ... There’s a difference in the violence in the James Bond films, especially the one that just passed. There’s the violence in a Quentin Tarantino film as opposed to the violence in a horror film or something that’s designed to make you uncomfortable. I think if there was a conversation simply about that, finding the right tone--not about this idea of toning it down or making it less than it already is."
Hitman Movie Still
On the tone of the film: "I thought what we were making was reminiscent of, in terms of specific films, it felt like the old John Woo films, some of the films that have come out. South Korea has a certain elegance to the film, but the violence was there as well. It wasn’t comical; we weren’t making something that felt like, ‘50 guys just died, I hardly noticed.’ It wasn’t that kind of thing. And I think that as the movie changed, Xavier and I had a lot of conversations about the type of violence and how it changes throughout the film as the character changes. Xavier was a very thoughtful guy, a very smart guy; he really is the main reason I was enthusiastic about this project. It’s not lost on me, the fact that Fox offered me a project like this, and it’s quite an opportunity and quite flattering. I’ve never done anything like this before, and had this type of responsibility, and that’s all well and good. But Xavier, from the moment we met, his enthusiasm for the material ... he was aiming high."
On finding humor in the story: "We tried to find some moments, we definitely did. Perhaps not enough, I haven’t seen the final thing, but it’s always nice when you can find those moments ... we’re not yukin’ it up by any means; [Xavier] was trying to make a serious film."
On signing on for future films: "Yes ... There’s certainly a reach of possibility, but we’re getting ahead of ourselves ... There’s plenty of guys with bald heads and tattoos on [their] backs; I’m sure they could make Agent 48."
On Hitman becoming a franchise: "These days, it seems like everything is intended to be. If it’s successful, there’s going to be another one. It’s hard to find a movie these days that doesn’t have a franchise potential. Someone was telling me about The Game Plan sequel; I was like, ‘Really? It’s a franchise? I didn’t see that.’ But it did great, so why the f*ck not."
On his next project: "I’m doing a movie called The High Life ... It is a guy named Gary Yates is directing it; he directed a movie a few years ago, which was at Sundance that was called Seven Times Lucky--it was a great little film. It’s a movie about four morphine addicts in 1983, who attempt to rob the bank, and it’s funny."
Hitman Movie Still
On balancing big budget films and small independents: "Right now, my mindset is I’m really excited about Hitman, and I can’t wait to do this tiny little film because--God bless the studio executives for giving me this job, but it’s a really different creative conversation. It’s nice to be able to go and just shoot, and just shoot. You’ve got 98 pages--whatever the script is, and you’re like, ‘That’s perfect, let’s shoot that, that’s great.’ It’s a nice feeling. The director’s got all the power in the world, and those are great things. And on the other hand, when that’s done, I’ll say something like, ‘Somebody get me a big fuckin’ trailer, cause this is ridiculous.’ It’s a fuckin’ joke, this didn’t have cable, or anything like that. I can’t heat my pool.’ No, it’s lovely to be able to go back and forth and if I can keep doing it. I had the pleasure of working with Bruce Willis, and what he’s been able to--how he’s been able to go back and forth from big picture to small picture, without any lack of credibility or disrupting the film. There’s no sort of hurdle to get over; when he puts himself in a small picture, you don’t have to say, ‘Well, what the fuck is Bruce Willis doing in there?’ He’s a God damn genius, it’s really impressive, and I’d love to steal a page from that."
On bad feelings over the ending of Deadwood: "Honestly, [shakes his head no] ... it always comes out as ‘I really could give a shit.’ I mean that in the most respectful way. I had a great time making that show, and I’m very thankful for been given that experience, and to look at it from any other angle is it’s a slippery slope. I don’t think anyone owes me anything; I think I walk away from that saying, ‘Thank God it existed.’ I had great relationships from that show. And you know what’s better than seven or eight years on TV--three years on TV."
The 31-year-old Oscar winner has beaten the likes of Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz and Nicole Kidman to claim the No. 1 spot on The Hollywood Reporter's annual female rich list--receiving a staggering $15-$20 million paycheck per picture.
A Mighty Heart star Jolie, 32, comes in second, though her salary for new movie Beowulf was said to be a "mere" $8 million.
Diaz, 35, is placed third, with a $15 million-per-movie salary demand, though her take-home earnings from the most recent Shrek installment are pegged at a very healthy $30 million.
Last year's No. 2, Kidman, 40, fell to fourth place, with an asking price of $10-$15 million a film.
